The story of German entertainers – and, reportedly, life partners – Siegfried and Roy are slated for the series treatment at Apple TV+, with Jude Law playing magician Siegfried Fischbacher and Andrew Garfield playing animal trainer Roy Horn, Variety reported.
The duo were famous for their stage acts featuring exotic white tigers. Behind the scenes, they shared a larger estate, though they reportedly lived in separate houses. Even so, reports suggest that they were, at least for a time, romantically involved.
The upcoming series "is based on the Apple Original Podcast, 'Wild Things: Siegfried & Roy,'" the entertainment news outlet detailed, with Law and Garfield executive producing in addition to their roles in front of the cameras.
"WandaVision" producer-director Matt Shakman will also executive produce, as well as helm the premiere episode of the eight-installment series.
The duo met in 1959 and performed on cruise ships and venues in Europe before finding their way to the United States and the Las Vegas show for which they are best remembered.
"They famously performed their act featuring magic and white tigers at the Mirage Hotel and Casino from 1990-2003," Variety recalled. "The act ended in 2003 when Horn was bitten in the throat by one of their tigers during a live performance, causing severe damage, while he also suffered a stroke."
After years of recuperation and therapy, Horn was able to take the stage in 2009 for one last performance with Siegfried – as well as with Mantacore, the tiger that had attacked him in 2003.
The pair were reluctant to discuss their personal lives, but those close to them maintained they were, or had been, lovers. Siegfried and Roy themselves limited the discussion to saying they were best friends, but the New York Times referred to them as "domestic as well as professional partners" in Fischbacher's 2020 obituary, as well as in Horn's obit the following year, Newsweek noted.
Law and Garfield, both straight actors, have a level of queer cred. Law played gay roles early in his career, including that of demon twink Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas, a lover of English pet Oscar Wilde, in Brian Gilbert's 1997 Stephen Fry-starring film "Wilde."
Garfield, apart from starring in two "The Amazing Spider Man" movies (and co-starring in the most recent Tom Holland-led iteration of that superhero's franchise), starred on Broadway in "Angels in America." In 2018, Garfield mused in an interview that, "Up until this point I've only been sexually attracted to women," but added, "I always try to surrender to the mystery of not being in charge."
