Republican Congresswoman Trolls First Elected Trans Congresswoman Sarah McBride
READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Republicans are finding it fair game to attack Delaware congresswoman Sarah McBride on the floor of Congress by purposely misgendering her. The first elected trans member of Congress has faced an uphill battle with Republicans, led by South Carolina rep Nancy Mace, who promised she would block McBride from using women's rooms in the Capital building. Her threat did not come to pass after a rule was set in place by Speaker Mike Johnson barring transgender people from using single-sex bathrooms.
The Daily Mail writes that despite being told she had to use the men's bathroom in the Capitol, McBride said she was not fazed by the move.
"She said while she disagrees with Johnson's rule barring her from the women's bathroom, she is committed to following the rule and has no intention of breaking it."
"This effort to distract from the real issues facing this country hasn't distracted me over the last several days, as I've remained hard at work preparing to represent the greatest state in the union come January," she said at the time.
McBride also turned the other cheek on the House floor when Illinois Republican Congresswoman Mary Miller said she "refused to deny biological reality" by addressing Sarah McBride as "the gentleman from Delaware" on the floor of the House Thursday, reports the Daily Mail.
Miller spoke before McBride was set to give her first speech on the House floor.
"The chair recognizes the gentleman from Delaware, Mr. McBride, for five minutes," Miller said.
McBride made no response to Miller's comments; instead said, "Thank you, Madame Speaker" before making her prepared remarks.
But another Democrat, Nanette Barragán of California, did attempt to deliver some form of retribution later on.
Barragán was next to talk on the floor after McBride and when Miller yielded, she said: "Thank you, Mr. Speaker."
Miller continued her transphobic rant on X, writing: "If we want to Make America Healthy Again, we have to first commit to acknowledging reality.
"For the past four years, the left has been demanding that we deny reality. NO! We will not do it. There are two sexes. God CREATED us male and female. For all of millennia everyone agreed. It is not loving or compassionate to acquiesce to a lie!"
For her part, McBride rose above the anti-trans rhetoric with a post that ignored Miller and instead focused on her speech.
"I shared the fears from Delawareans across our state who worried for their jobs and the care and services they rely on because of this administration's unconstitutional efforts to abuse power and cut and gut lifesaving programs," McBride wrote.
This past week Congresswoman Mace made headlines by using a transphobic slur on the House floor, where she was admonished by male Democrats. Newsweek wrote that at a hearing about the U.S. Agency for International Development, Congressman Gerald Connolly called Mace out for using a slur, but before he could finish, Mace interrupted him. "Trannie, trannie, trannie," Mace said. "I don't really care. You want penises in women's bathrooms, and I'm not going to have it. No, thank you."
"Mace has repeatedly referred to McBride as 'a man,' with fellow Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene going further by describing her as a predator and accusing her of being 'mentally ill,'" adds the Daily Mail.
