Fed Up with Flawed Depictions, Liza Minnelli Announces Tell-All Memoir is On the Way

Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 3 MIN.

Get ready for a wild ride through the ups and downs of an icon's decades-long career, because Liza Minnelli has decided to spill the tea with an upcoming memoir, reversing her longstanding vow never to write her own story.

In comments to People Magazine, Minnelli recounted, "Since I was old enough to put pencil to paper, people asked me to write books about my career."

But, she said, "'Absolutely not! Tell it when I'm gone!' Was my philosophy," Minnelli added.

The reason for her change of heart? A documentary full of "twisted half-truths" figured large, as did "a recent miniseries that just didn't get it right," Minnelli detailed, adding that those projects were "made by people who didn't know my family, and don't really know me."

Capping it all off was what Minnelli called "a sabotaged appearance at the Oscars," referring to the moment in 2022 when she appeared in a wheelchair, sharing the stage with Lady Gaga as the duo announced the Oscar for Best Picture.

According to fellow singer Michael Feinstein, Minnelli had wanted to use a director's chair due to back issues, but the show's manager insisted in her being seated in a wheelchair.

"Finally, I was mad as hell!" Minnelli declared to People Mag. "Over dinner one night, I decided, it's my own d--- story."

Added the icon: "I'm gonna share it with you because of all the love you've given me."

Feinstein is helping out on the project, Minnelli revealed.

"We've been joined at the hip for 40 years," the "Cabaret" star told outlet. "As Ambassador of the Great American Songbook and my absolute favorite collaborator. Michael's one of the greats, he's razor-sharp and he tells the truth."

"That's important because, as I fly towards my eighth decade of living, memories differ," Minnelli added.

Feinstein isn't Minnelli's only collaborator on the project. "Written in collaboration with Pulitzer Prize winner Heidi Evans and Los Angeles Times alum Josh Getlin, the book will offer an intimate look into Minnelli's life from her early childhood as the daughter of the late Judy Garland to her rise to fame in the hit musical 'Cabaret,'" People Mag detailed.

The upcoming memoir won't just be about her, Minnelli hinted.

"This tome has a unique place in history," the star teased. "Most of you don't know how far back we go. The Minnellis have been in show business for literally hundreds of years!"

Minnelli's own career is certainly a high point in that generations-long tradition. "The performer is one of the few who have achieved EGOT status," People Mag noted, "winning an Emmy Award, Grammy Award, Oscar Award and a Tony Award."

"She nabbed an Emmy for her concert film 'Liza with a Z' and a Grammy Legend Award in 1990," the account said.

Despite concerns about her health that the wheelchair-bound Oscars appearance heightened, Minnelli made it a point to reassure fans that "I'm still here, still kicking a--, still loving life and still creating."

"So, until this book arrives, know that I'm laughing, safe in every way, surrounded by loved ones and excited to see what's right around the curve of life," she added.

"Kids," the superstar summed up, "wait 'til you hear this!"

"The book will be published in hardcover print, e-book and audio editions in the spring of 2026," People Mag detailed. "The audio edition of the book will include never-before-heard autobiographical recordings from the last 15 years."
