Hunter Schafer Opens Up about Dating, Season 3 of 'Euphoria,' and More

Trans "Euphoria" star Hunter Schafer had plenty to say in a recent interview with GQ Magazine. Covering the magazine this month, the rising star talked about the people she's dated, the death of her "Euphoria" co-star Angus Cloud, the show's prospects for a third season, her new movie, and more.

One former beau that Schafer discussed was Dominic Fike, a fellow actor she met in 2021. "I had had so many shitty experiences with men before – not from dating them, but just in life," the actor told GQ. "I think I had built up a wall that was way too thick around them." But, she added, she "fell in love" with Fike, with whom she "had a really beautiful relationship... and it really opened me up in that way."

Someone else Schafer talked about dating: Spanish singer Rosalía, with whom she'd been rumored to have a relationship. Though at first reluctant to discuss Rosalía, Schafer was later "happy to confirm that they dated for about five months in the fall and winter of 2019," GQ relayed.

"These days, they're friends, which is something Schafer is proud of," the article added.

For the moment, though, Schafer is single and happy to stay that way for a while. After splitting with Fike, she told GQ, "I want to make sure I'm good all the way before I jump into something else."

She wept while talking about the death of her "Euphoria" castmate Angus Cloud, saying, "People really fell in love with Angus."

"He was really one of the heartbeats of 'Euphoria,'" Schafer added. "It's always the people that are just kind of a little too good for the world and a little too pure. He was a fucking angel. He was sunshine."

Recalling that Schafer was a plaintiff against North Carolina's so-called "bathroom bill" when she was still a teenager, GQ noted that the actor's "home state of North Carolina" is up to its old tricks, having become "the 22nd state to enact legislation that restricts or bans trans minors' access to gender-affirming medical care, even as more and more young people identify as trans nationally."

That makes Jules, her trans character on "Euphoria," more important than ever "at a time when trans youth are being stripped of their rights across the country," the article said. Schafer said that Jules is "deeply intertwined with who I am as a person and who I was at that age. She feels like an artifact of younger me."

As for a third season of the the show – the prospects for which seemed recently thrown into doubt – Schafer would only verify that she had "also seen that rumor" (that the show would return after a time jump) "in the news."

But don't expect to see Schafer's career constrained to the small screen.

"Just six years into her acting career, the multitalented Schafer is in high demand, with a small part in an upcoming Yorgos Lanthimos film and a role alongside Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway in David Lowery's 'Mother Mary' on the horizon," GQ said, going on to detail that the Gen Z "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" actor is "a visual artist turned activist turned model turned actor, the kind of multihyphenate and natural, passionate polymath that seems to be the standard for creative types in her cohort."

Also, don't expect that Schafer will be content to be known for being a transgender actress. Quite the opposite: Schafer told GQ that it "took a while to learn that I don't want to be [reduced to] that, and I find it ultimately demeaning to me and what I want to do."

"Especially after high school, I was sick of talking about it," Schafer added, referring to her days as a young activist standing up to repressive state legislation. "I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on."
