Acapulco Proclaims Official LGBT Neighborhood

Acapulco -- Mexico's original beach destination -- is breaking barriers in Latin America. After pursuing a permit for two years, the city officially announced on Wednesday, May 17 (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia), that La Condesa, one of Acapulco's Golden Zone's most important beaches, has become the destination's official LGBT neighborhood.

This initiative from "Sin Etiquetas Guerrero" ("No Labels Guerrero"), a civil association that works on promoting sexual diversity and equal rights, paved the way to the neighborhood officially debuting a multicolored crosswalk featuring the rainbow flag, along with a physical flag on permanent display.

Located on a stretch of Avenida Costera Miguel Alem�n, it has become a daily meeting spot for all gay travelers and locals looking to enjoy the radiant sun and its gorgeous beach; this lively neighborhood hosts Acapulco's top LGBT bars and effervescent night scene for everyone to explore.

La Condesa is the first official LGBT neighborhood in the country and first LGBT beach in Latin America. While there are other famous LGBT areas in Mexico such as Zona Rosa in Mexico City or the Romance District in Puerto Vallarta, this is the first time an official declaration by government authorities recognizes it as such. The news reinforces Acapulco's long-standing tolerant and gay-friendly atmosphere.
